First Diving Competition

PISD Diving Invitational

La Porte Aquatics participated in its first diving competition in almost 3 years and it was a good one! Seniors Jackson Thralls and Riley Koonce finish 1st and 3rd.

This was a huge experience boost for the first-time divers. They learn so much from watch and talking with the other divers from the different schools. Both divers did the same dive in their first ever Diving Meet. As a diver, you are only allowed two "No Dives". After your second one, you are Disqualified (DQ'd) from the meet. There are three positions that a diver can perform the dives and they Straight, Tuck, and Pike. Each one has a different level of difficulty to the dive. For example, the Forward Dive can be done in all three positions, but all three have different difficulties. If you do the Forward Dive in the Straight position, the difficulty will be 1.4, but if you do a Pike position you will only get 1.3 or the Tuck position will be 1.2. If you do a dive in the wrong position, you will still get credit for the dive, but point will be taken off. As a diver you must take at least three steps during their approach. They can take more, but nothing less.

Jackson's first dive was a Forward Dive in the straight position with a difficulty of 1.4. He scored a 16.10. Riley's first dive. Riley did the Forward Dive and got a score of 14.70. Their second dive was a Forward 1 SS (front flip) in the tuck position with a difficulty of 1.4, He got a score of 10.50. Riley did the wrong dive in his second attempt and was count as a "No Dive". This is his first "No Dive" of the meet. He got a score of 0. With the third dive, Jackson did a Forward 1 1/2 SS (1 1/2 front flip) in the tuck position with a difficulty of 1.6. Jackson got a 21.60. Riley got a 23.20. In the 4th attempt Jackson did a Back Dive in the straight position with a difficulty of 1.7 and his score was 21.25. Riley scored 18.70. His 5th attempt as a Back 1 SS (back flip) in the tuck position with a difficulty of 1.5. His score was 15.00 and Riley 15.75. In his last dive Jackson did an Inward Dive in a tuck position. That had a difficulty of 1.4 and got a 18.90 and Riley scored 17.50.

Jackson finish of the meet with a total of 103.35 for first place and Riley finished with a score of 89.85. That was good enough for third.
