District 18 5A Swimming and Diving Championships

Girls: 5th place; Boys: 4th place

LPHS Swim and Dive Team competed in the 2025 District 18-5A Swimming Championships at Friendswood High School. There were 3 swimmers that are moving on in their individual event and all 6 relays have qualified for the Region V-5A Swimming Championship in two weeks.
 
Junior Claire Underwood started the swim meet off for the Bulldogs and improved her time in the 200 yard Freestyle by keeping her time below the 3 minute mark. Sophomore Jake Gazaw started the swim meet off for the boys and had a huge time drop of -8.32 seconds in the 200 yard Freestyle and bringing his time down to 2:16.89. This also brought the Bulldogs first point into the swim meet and the first on the team to qualify for Regionals for an individual event. Sophomore Amelie Mastan was the only LPHS in the 200 Individual Medley and just missed the top 8 coming in 9th. In the 50 yard Freestyle Freshman Natalie Chavez finished with a 31.22. This improved her time by -1.05 seconds. Junior Isabella Huerta had the biggest time drop in this event by going 32.99. That is a -2.70 second improvement on her time. Senior Kayla Juarez also improved her time by -0.06 seconds. Senior Riley Koonce was seeded 7th and needed to get into the Top 6 to get into Regionals. He improved his time by -0.46 seconds and that was just enough to move him into the Top 6 to qualify for Regionals. Freshman Lucas Prigmore and Cole Bailey both improved their time by -0.13 and -0.46 seconds to keep their time below 30 seconds. In the 100 yard Freestyle event, both Kayla Juarez and Isabella Huerta again improved on there time. Kayla improved by -9.48 seconds and Isabella improved by -5.93 seconds. On the Boys side of the 100 yard Freestyle, Senior Coby Chauvette got below the 1 minute mark with a 57.96 and improved his time by -2.82 seconds. Cole Bailey swam a 1:08.21. This is also an improvement of -1.17 seconds. In the longest race of the meet, 500 yard Freestyle, Juniors Alexandra Pilkerton and Claire Underwood had huge time drops, while Amelie Mastan finished with the fastest time for La Porte with a 7:55.91 These girls show what it take to push through the pain of going 20 lengths of the pool. Claire got her 500 yard Freestyle time below the 8 minute mark for the first time finishing at 7:59.11. This was an improvement of -16.24 seconds. Alexandra also saw a huge improvement of -24.27 seconds. In the Boys 500 yard Freestyle, Jake Gazaw became the second person to qualify for Regionals with a Top 6 finish and a time of 6:17.68. This was -18.50 seconds faster than his previous time. In the Girls 100 yard Backstroke event, Natalie Chavez went -1.08 fast and the Boys 100 yard Backstroke saw Sophomore Jaime Reyes improved to 1:18.88 with a -2.48 second drop. Sophomore Ean Lopez also an improvement of -0.08. In the last individual event of the meet, the 100 yard Breaststroke saw Sophomore Adilyn Smith and Senior Coby Chauvette improved their times. Adilyn swim -0.63 seconds faster and Coby became the third swimmer to qualify for Regionals, finish 3rd, and improved his time to 1:13.67. This is -1.54 faster.
 
All six LPHS relays made it to the next round and all improved their time. Senior Diver Jackson Thralls has also placed 6th and has qualified for Regionals. He becomes the first diver to qualify for Regionals since Allen Bottego did it in 2021. La Porte Girls finished 5th and Boys finished 4th in District.

Region V-5A Swimming and Diving Championships, Thursday, February 6th at 10:00am (Diving), Friday, February 7th and 8th at 2:00pm (Swimming). This will be at The Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land, Texas.
